Imagine a future version of your life. Just a short distance ahead and you are living a life that you truly love. Maybe it’s a life that is larger or fuller than you could have ever imagined. Maybe it’s the opposite - quietly paying attention as a grasshopper takes flight. It’s easy to forget how precious it is. We assume there’s always more time, and put off what really matters. I think we all fall into the trap of moving through our days focused only on routine or responsibility, taking life for granted, and the opportunity it offers to find joy, beauty or awe in any moment we choose.

Is it really a choice, though?
It's a universal experience to get caught up in the zombie-trance of routine. And unlike your favorite tv show, it doesn't relay one shotguns and swords, but an ongoing mindfulness practice to escape. and I think we ALL benefit from a reminder, like the intellectual equivalent of a dramatic soap opera slap to “Snap out of it”. Not just to move out of your comfort zone or embrace novelty – favorite topics I have written about at length – but to ask yourself the big picture, perspective-making question: What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? What is the truth you’ve been avoiding, the dream you’ve been shirking from? The part of yourself you’re not living fully? What do you need to know you’ve tried, given your ALL to, leaving behind everything you’ve got in the process?
Jetlag, Anemoia or Just Slow Thoughts on a Hot Summer Day?
Every so often I am taken hold by the summer day or am haunted by the Five invitations, and the reminder: Don’t wait. Experience all of it. Be fully present for it. Open your mind, childlike, to the raw beauty available in the many moments of each day. Spend time with people and in places that remind you to really live today. Be that reminder for someone else. Take a moment of pause and reflection, not because its trendy or as a checklist item, but to very simply convene with the world around you as if with fresh eyes.

Today has been one of those days for me. I find myself swimming in déjà vu and watery-edged memories of childhood, and just the reminder that it all moves very quickly. Have you had a day like this? Did you poke and ponder philosophically at it? What did it reveal?
For every one of us: this is our one wild and precious life. Let’s not waste it.
