I often describe myself as the luckiest person I know. Every time I step out of my office into the vibrant hum of midtown Manhattan, thread through the beauty of Grand Central, and head home to my fun, seaside town, I can’t help but marvel: How did I get this life? How did I ever get so lucky?
By most early indicators, this wasn’t the life I was “supposed” to have.

I was born into poverty in the snow-covered, far less glamorous end of New York State. I grew up a sensitive, anxious, nerdy kid—the classic overachieving firstborn to a teenage mother and an already alcoholic father. I buried myself in school, thriving in spelling bees and oratorical contests, hoping—though I didn’t know it then—that I could outwork the things that felt uncertain at home.

Wait, you might be thinking, this sounds exactly like the rags-to-riches montage that someone stepping out of her shiny Manhattan high rise office building would have in her backstory.
And there was a time when I seemed to be on the right track – I was waking myself up early to do a Denise Austen exercise video then watch Rush Limbaugh…. When I was 11! To my dad’s credit, he didn’t impose his belief - that Limbaugh is a fool - and let me come to that realization on my own. I was pretty self-guided, really: earning straight A's, babysitting 30 every day after school and most weekends, and dreaming of being admitted to Harvard.

However, my story takes its turn just a couple years later. My dad’s drinking had finally hit its awful crescendo, and he was hospitalized with complete liver failure and gangrene. He had very nearly succeeded in drinking himself to death. He was 39 years old. When he left the hospital, initially he started drinking again and this was the last straw for my mother. My mother—terrified but brave—finally left him and took me and my siblings on her own. We had to move into the city into a section 8 house, and this began the dark chapter. The foundation I had relied on began to crack. I lost my anchor. I lost my way.

I dropped out of high school at 17. I was waitressing at a buffet restaurant, riding the bus from my apartment in the inner city, and living in a fog. For a decade, I let life happen to me instead of choosing it. That bright-eyed, high-achieving girl faded into the background, and in her place stood someone who had lost her sense of being the lead character in her own life.

And yet, this is where my real story begins.

Despite everything, I never counted myself out. Even in my lowest moments, I never believed it was too late, too much, or that I was incapable of working hard and dreaming again. That belief—stubborn, radical hope—became my lifeline.

I got to work. Slowly, steadily, sometimes painfully. I pursued education, starting with night classes to get my GED. I built a career from the very bottom, working my way up. I studied change—formally and informally—over decades. Today, I help others navigate their own turning points, transformations, and reinventions. I walk beside them through uncertainty and toward something bigger, bolder, more aligned.

My life is living proof that even when the odds aren’t in your favor, you can become the architect of your future. That change isn’t just possible—it’s inevitable, and with the right tools, it can be exhilarating.

I’ve made a career out of helping others rise—because I’ve done it myself. Yes, I'm a veteran change strategist, executive coach, and transformation expert with over two decades of experience helping individuals and organizations navigate complex change. But my real expertise? I’ve lived it.
