What does it take to feel at home in a foreign land in your 20s? And what does it mean to come home again in your 30s—only to discover you’re a little foreign there, too?

I think about that principle often—but not just at the dinner table. When it comes to making big life changes, I suggest adopting a similar approach: 

What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? What is the truth you’ve been avoiding, the dream you’ve been shirking from? The part of yourself you’re not living fully? What do you need to know you’ve tried, given your ALL to, leaving behind everything you’ve got in the process?

Volunteering isn't only a personal journey. It can be a shared commitment, a reason to keep learning together, and a way to pass down values not through lectures, but through lived experience.

This week, as one month ends and another begins, I’m holding these two celebrations together: Pride, with its bright banners of inclusion and defiance. Independence Day, with its aspirational promise of liberty and justice for all. Neither is finished and both demand our participation.
