Introducing the Thrive Methodology: Defining Your Target State
Change is inevitable. Success in change, however, is not.
Whether you're leading a team through a major transformation or navigating a personal shift, the difference between a change that sticks and one that fizzles often comes down to clarity—specifically, how clearly you define your future state. Have you carefully considered exactly what you intend to do, specifically what you do not want to do, and why? I have watched so many changes go off the rails, quickly morphing into something that no one wants or needs, because the future state was not crystal clear to even the creators of the change.
This is where the Thrive Methodology begins.

T is for Target State
The first step in any change journey is defining exactly where you’re headed. It’s not enough to have a vague sense of wanting to "improve" or "grow." You need a vision that is crisp, thorough, and precise.
Your Target State consists of two key elements:
Your Ultimate Target State: This is the long-term vision—the fully realized outcome you are striving for. If everything goes exactly right, what does success look like in its fullest form? What is the “why” behind the activity? How will you know you’ve achieved it?
Your Near-Term Milestone: This is the critical first checkpoint, typically set around three months out. It serves as both a tangible short-term goal and a foundation for long-term success.
By defining these two vantage points, you create a clear trajectory for change. You can begin to map out the major milestones that bridge the gap between where you are now and where you want to be.
The Risk of a Fuzzy Target
Clarity at the outset is critical. Many change efforts fail because they start with murky intentions. It’s tempting to just get moving and figure it out as you go, but without a clear end-state, you risk drifting toward an outcome that’s convenient rather than transformative. And at some point every great change is truly challenging. If you’re not anchored to a change that is a straight line between your deeply held desires and its outcome, you very well may lose the will to keep going, or even worse, continue working tirelessly for an ultimate outcome that doesn’t really address your needs.
That doesn’t mean your goals can’t evolve—quite the opposite. Adjusting your trajectory based on experience and insight is essential. But this evolution should be intentional and strategic, not a byproduct of unclear thinking that leads to settling for an inferior result. By anchoring early in a very clear understanding of what you want and why, you have a lighthouse by which to guide changes so that while the details change, the underlying goal does not.
The Power of Envisioning
One of the most powerful tools in change-making is visualization. The act of defining your Target State in concrete detail does more than just provide direction—it primes you for success. A clearly envisioned goal creates focus, sharpens decision-making, and keeps you aligned with what truly matters.
However, self-directed envisioning has limits. It’s difficult to challenge your own assumptions or consider perspectives you haven’t encountered. That’s why outside input—whether from a coach, mentor, or even a curious and insightful friend—can be invaluable.
A Thought Experiment: The Perspective-Driven "5 Why’s"
To start refining your own Target State, try this variation on the classic "5 Why’s" exercise, in which you answer the question in increasing detail, as each new “why” is asked of the previous response, in a classic root-cause analysis:
State your goal. Write down your long-term Target State in a single sentence.
Assign a unique perspective to each "Why" questioner. Choose five people in your life—mentors, family members, colleagues, even skeptics—each with a distinct point of view.
Ask "Why is this important?" five times, each from a different perspective. For example, how would your closest friend challenge your reasoning? How would your toughest critic question your priorities? How would a future version of yourself reflect on this goal?
Answer each "Why" authentically, considering that person's unique concerns and curiosities. This forces you to refine your goal, uncover hidden motivations, and identify potential blind spots.
Reflect on your answers. What patterns emerge? Did any perspective shift your thinking? Does your Target State still resonate, or does it need adjustment?
By engaging in this multi-perspective exercise, you gain a deeper understanding of your motivation and strengthen your commitment to your Target State.
