Embracing Maybe Happier Endings

Have you ever watched something that felt like it was speaking directly to your soul? That’s what Maybe Happy Ending did for me. In a season of change, this musical felt like a mirror reflecting back some of life’s most profound truths about impermanence, love, and the courage to move forward. Maybe we should all be embracing maybe happier endings?

Maybe Happy Ending is one of those rare and precious shows that redefines what a Broadway musical can be. Like Hadestown or Hamilton before it, it’s the buzziest show of the season for good reason. It tells a beautiful, deeply human story with stunning performances and a set design so masterful that even I—someone who rarely notices staging—was completely captivated. This is one of those once-in-a-decade shows that somehow feels both uniquely of this moment and utterly timeless.

At its core, Maybe Happy Ending is a masterclass in change—especially the kind that is inevitable, heartbreaking, and deeply transformative. It explores the universal emotions we all experience as we navigate love, loss, and self-discovery. Like so many things since January 20, I found watching it in 2025 much closer to its themes of uncertainty and impermanence than I had before. The poignancy of the story and the feelings of true loss on the horizon are immediate now in a way they weren’t just a few months ago.

I was lucky to win a discounted lottery ticket to see this show in previews, and I didn’t hesitate to pay full price to see it again recently. Going in blind was a gift, so I’ll honor the “no spoilers” spirit here, focusing instead on the broader themes that resonated with me—especially from the lens of birthday reflections and coaching through change.
